Setting Up Email in Outlook Express

Once you have set up an email address (or addresses) through Shortgrass Web Development, you can use Microsoft Outlook Express to check and manage your domain-based email.

Setting Up Outlook Express

To setup Microsoft Outlook Express to receive your emails, follow the following steps:

1)  If you just started using Outlook Express, you'll get a popup box that asks you a series of questions (skip to step 2). If you have used Outlook Express before, you will not get this popup menu. Instead you must go to the 'Tools' menu, and click on 'Accounts'.

This will being up a list of your email accounts. Select ‘Add’ then ‘Mail…’  to bring up the popup box.

2) Enter a name for this email account. It can be anything like your name, or the name of your business. Click NEXT

3) Enter the email address provided by Shortgrass Web Development, LLC. Click NEXT

4) The next screen is your incoming and outgoing email addresses. This information is also provided in this email in the format of   ‘mail.yoursite.com’.  Enter the corresponding addresses and click NEXT.

5) Enter the username and password provided by Shortgrass Web Development, LLC. Click NEXT

6) A screen should say that you have successfully setup your new email account. Click FINISH.

7) Go to 'Tools' and 'Account'. Click on the 'Properties' button to get into your email options.

Go to the Servers tab, and then check 'My Server Requires Authentication'

Now you should be able to successfully login to your new email account.

Optional Settings

Go to 'Tools' and 'Account'. Click on the 'Properties' button to get into your email options.

Keep Emails on Server:

One setting that we feel is important is the option to keep a copy of all your emails on the mail server. Maybe you want to pull up an old email on a different computer. You won't be able to unless the option is set, because by default most mail programs actually pull out emails off the server when you send/recieve them, and just save them solely on your PC instead. If your PC crashes, then there's a higher chance your emails will be lost.
To enable this protective feature, select the 'Advanced' tab and check the box labeled, "Leave a Copy of Messages on Server."
Now your emails will be saved on both your PC and the mail server.

Common Problems:

There are a few common problems that people experience during their first attempt at using their new email account:

Attachment Size: There is a 10 MB limit on your email attachments, so please keep this in mind when attempting to send Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, or multiple uncompressed images. A quick fix is to try compressing your attachments into .ZIP or .RAR files.

3rd Party Programs: Many people have SPAM Filters and Firewalls running on their computer (ex: Norton, McAfee, etc) which can interfere with your ability to send and/or recieve emails. If you are running a 3rd party 'Internet Protection' program, please consult your User's Manual for additional information on configuring your program's internet and email settings.
