CMS Editor - Common Questions

Below is a list of common questions regarding the functionality of the CMS (Content Management System) website editor.

I tried to copy and paste a graphic, but nothing happens. Does it have to be in a specific size or format before it may be copied and pasted onto my site?

You can not copy and paste an image directly. It has to be uploaded via the "Insert/Edit Image" icon on the tool bar. The reason you have to use the "Insert/Edit Image" tool is because the graphic must be properly uploaded to your website's server and stored in a specified location so that people can access it. Copy and pasting won't post the graphic on the server.

I have added several blank boxes or tables to my site. I tried to insert copied text in the blank box between the quote and where the graphic should be by both "pasting" and typing. Essentially, the text (using both methods) expanded the table and also stayed at the bottom of the table which is where the cursor is. Can or should text be added here? If so, how then does one add text in the upper portion of the table? That is, is it possible to move the cursor upwards in the table?

To get the Text to the top of the column, you would "Right Click" inside the column, select "Cell Properties" , Then set the "Vertical Alignment" to be "Top". Similar steps can be taken if you wish to move text, graphics, or other content to the Top, Middle, or Bottom of a table.

I placed my changes in a table. I wanted to delete the table's border lines or at least make them invisible. However, cannot seem to find a method to do this. How can the border be deleted?

Hover the mouse over the table border until you see the Double arrows (One horizontal, one veritcal). Left Click on the Table to select it. Now Right click and select table properties. Set the border value to '0' to remove the border.

Suppose that a change does not meet the desired results. Do I have to cancel the change and return to the edit page?

As long as you don't "Submit" the change, then you should just choose the "Cancel Edit" option and then go back into the Edit from the menu. This will discard the undesired changes you made to the website during the entire session.

I am trying to upload a PDF document to our site. I already have the text there, but I keep getting an error message saying the "file uploader is disabled" What do I do?

If you're getting the 'file uploader is disabled' message, it's because you are probably trying to upload your document in the wrong area. There are two methods of uploading files, however we intentionally disabled one because it wasn't as reliable as using the following method:

  1. Highlight text you want to be clickable and select the 'Insert/Edit Link' button from the nav bar.
  2. In the popup box that appears, stay inside the 'Link Info' tab and click "Browse Server"
  3. A second popup window will appear and give you a list of all the documents, images, etc. that you've uploaded. You can select a preexisting one, or click on the 'Browse' button under 'Upload a new file in this folder'.
  4. Locate and upload the file, then it will appear in the table. Select the file and it will take you back to the window with the 'Link Info' tab.
  5. Click 'OK' and you're done.

I want to add a link from my website to another website. Can I legally link to their site? How do I get them to link to my site?

Linking to other websites is perfectly legal; in fact it is encouraged. The more links there are going to a person's website, the higher that person's website will get in the search engine rankings.

What is illegal is copying intellectual property (text, documents, and/or images) from another website and placing it on your site. In the case where you want to feature someone else's content, it is best to either get permission to use it and to cite the original source, or link directly to the content on their site.

As far as getting someone else to link to your site, you can do a link exchange (aka 'link swapping') with another website. This can usually be done by simply contacting the owner of the site in question and politely asking whether or not they would like to participate. However, just like there is nothing someone can do to make you link to their site, there is nothing you can do to make them link to yours. There is no rule that website linking has to be a two-way street.

Do you have any suggestions or guidelines about linking to other sites?

  • Avoid linking to other websites that have little or nothing to do with your site. If you sell custom cabnets, links to woodworking sites and tool sites are very helpful to someone who wants more information on custom cabnets; links to your favorite shoe company or your neighbor's restaurant are not.
  • Don't link to sites that have a conflict of interest with your site. This would be like an animal rights group linking to a national hunting club.
  • Don't link to a direct competitor. All this does is give free advertising to people who might take business away from you.
  • Don't link to sites just to 'fill a links page'. All links should be relevant and have purpose for being on your site.
  • Periodically check your links. Sites change often, and having too many 'dead links' can hurt the overall image of your site, as well as yourself or your business. Even worse is the possibility that a URL (site name) could be obtained, and the website you had been linking to now contains less-than 'family friendly' content.
